Last month, Gene Simmons and his long-term girlfriend Shannon Tweed made the press rounds to promote the sixth season of their reality show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels (A&E, Tuesday, 10 p.m. ET). It wasn't pretty -- which is why this clip from Tuesday's season finale comes as such a surprise! Is an engagement on the horizon for the dueling duo?
Simmons, bassist for Kiss, and Tweed, a former Playboy Playmate of the Year, hammered away at each other amid interviews in June for Today, the Associated Press, and on The Joy Behar Show -- where Tweed ripped her mic off and left the set in frustration. And, indeed, this season has shown them bickering over his affairs with other women, and Tweed packing her bags. The overall impression: this season will end with the couple splitting up after 28 years together.
Ironically, the teaser for Tuesday's finale gives the opposite impression. On a beach in Belize, Simmons gets down on one knee, looks into Tweed's eyes, and delivers a particularly cheesy marriage proposal.
"I come with so much baggage, but you're the only friend I've got," he says. "You're the only one I've ever loved. You're the only one I love and you're the only one I ever will love, and I will say those words to anybody." She dissolves into tears -- knowing, as his fans do, that he's famously pledged to never marry.
So what happened in the time between the filming of that finale and their press interviews to promote the season? Perhaps their relationship hit the rocks again. Or maybe all those contentious interviews were a hoax, meant to drum up drama for the season.
Or maybe it's a little of both. Either way, we've got to admit: this is one intriguing pair.
